Big news for Beyonce fans as we hear that she's just landed a multi-million dollar deal with Coty to launch her own fragrance in 2010. While news of the deal itself is no surprise, I'm somewhat surprised that it's Coty given that husband Jay-Z already has a deal with Parlux fragrances.
Back in April this year when we first heard about Jay-Z's deal together with fellow hip-hopsters Kanye West and Rihanna, there was speculation that Beyonce was also in on it. Turns out that speculation was wrong. So why did she choose Coty instead of Parlux? After all Parlux already has a pretty good track record – think Paris Hilton's perfume range, which won her a Fragrance Foundation Celebrity of the Year award. Maybe Coty's offer was just too good to refuse or maybe Beyonce just felt she'd rather be rubbing shoulders with some of Coty's other perfume celebs like Halle Berry, Kylie Minogue and Jennifer Lopez.
PS - I wonder what Beyonce's friends over at L'Oreal think considering that she was the face (and voice) of Emporio Diamonds back in 2007?
Update - forget L'Oreal and Parlux, it looks like Abercrombie and Fitch have got their claws out as we hear news that they're suing Beyonce as a result of this Coty deal. Turns out they're worried it will infringe on their own Fierce fragrance brand. How? Well Beyonce's alter ego is known as Sasha Fierce. Coty has however confirmed that the terms 'Fierce' and 'Sascha Fierce' will not be used in association with her forthcoming fragrance. This just sounds like a scheme by Abercrombie's lawyers to charge some exhorbitant legal fees.
